We had a great variety of drinks and we had good water sources for fishing. And we had many bands and troupes from across the land come to our legendary Tavern! Two floors of drinking debauchery. and those houses could have a 1z level basement. They each needed a house, with a small plot for a garden. Dwarves with a pop cap at 30, who dreamt of making the best Tavern along a road. It would be nice if walls weren't impenetrable, and that's a change that's probably gonna come one day. That doesn't make criticisms of the design invalid. We, as DF players, hand-wave a good amount of that because we're weird. It is generally a game developers job to make sure that there's a balance between challenge and difficulty. It is unreasonable to expect someone to play without the super OP walls when the alternative is uncontrollable defeat. The problem with walls is that they defend against sieges perfectly. Being overwhelmed by more siege soldiers than you can possibly handle is not one of them, for most people. There are ways to fail in dwarf fortress that are enjoyable. That's why it's important that the optimal route be fun not playing optimally inherently makes the game less fun.Įdit: Apparently people get super butt-hurt over my use of "optimal", so let me clarify. Every time something goes wrong, every time they fail, the knowledge of the optimal route will hang in their minds the knowledge that they could play better, and that their failure is due to their own choice to have fun. In the event that a player decides to play in a suboptimal fashion, for the sake of fun, that optimal fashion is still hanging over their heads. I just wanna take this statement a bit further. Given the chance, most players will optimise the fun out of their experience, and it's usually the designer's job to avoid this problem. My point being is that I feel the real fun is just rolling with it, and not trying too hard for perfect. The threats within need to be treated with booze and waterfalls, and are often the greater threat. However I accept that short of heavily metagaming (sealing the map in a cube) I am somewhat vulnerable to threats from the outside. In this case I've gone to considerable lengths to protect my fort. Get a flying fire breathing titan? Well then let's hope the crossbows have been practicing. However they can still climb over my walls if they're lucky. This is not only great fun to build but will likely succeed in repelling invaders. For example building a mini castle around the entrance and a moat. I don't leave my fort entrances wide open and let vile forces of darkness waltz right in. I know there's been a lot of talk about players wanting the optimal strategy, but to me the fun in this game is preparing adequately, but not quite.
